Why is There a Rise in the Need for Neurosurgery?

Neurological disorders are a public health issue. Around one billion people worldwide have some kind of neurological condition, including stroke, headache, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and neuro-infections.

If you are diagnosed with any of these conditions, you must immediately find a top neurology hospital in Bangalore and do a complete checkup. The neurosurgeon or the specialist will advise you for further medication and whether surgery is required.

Neurological conditions are easy to deal with when diagnosed at an early stage, and you can improve your health within months if you consult with the right doctor in time.

India’s metropolitan cities are where most neurological issues could be found. Bangalore is one of the top cities where people seek neurosurgery every year. The causes of these issues vary but can include infections, congenital abnormalities, genetic disorders, lifestyle, or environmental health problems.

In a 2004 survey conducted on 100,000 people, around 3,000 of them had at least one kind of neurological issue, ranging from minor to severe conditions, lifestyle changes, and environmental health issues being the top reasons.

But, is there a rise in demand for neurosurgery and neurologists?

It is a specialty that focuses on the surgical and medical care of the nervous system and brain. This field of medicine and surgery takes years of practice and learning, and that’s why India has only 1800 neurosurgeons (in 2018).

The number of medical students opting for neurology has increased but not enough to meet the requirement. The number of cases has been growing every year, and with the recent virus breakdown lockdowns job crisis, people are more vulnerable to several neurological diseases.

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that the requirement of surgeons, especially neurosurgeons, is expected to grow 13 percent by the next four years (2026) which is a lot more than the average growth. The situation is somewhat similar in India as well.

Indians are more likely to suffer from neurological diseases such as headaches, seizures, epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. Parkinson’s disease is also increasing in number every year.

What does a neurosurgeon do, and why is this job so demanding?

Every field in medicine and surgery is tough to master, and doctors take years to practice and perfect in a single area of study. Neurology is no different; the years of experience and knowledge acquired over that time make neurosurgeons capable of doing one of the most complex surgeries.

The neurosurgeon has to do the following things in the hospital:

  • Examining patients
  • Diagnosing the core issues
  • Perform surgeries
  • Oversee a team (pre and post-surgery assistance team)
  • Monitoring the patient’s progress
  • Collaborating with a team
  • Maintain records
  • Prescribing medications

These are the tasks only an experienced neurologist can do, and you can only get physicians with such caliber in a top neurology hospital in Bangalore. And it is because of the increase in neurological disorders every year the demand for neurologists is also increasing.

One can only avoid these disorders by regular diagnosis and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Though most of the disorders are because of genetic and environmental reasons, one can minimize the risk by following a nutritious diet, working out regularly, and having regular checkups.

Even if you are suffering from any of these disorders, a good lifestyle and diet can help you recover after the surgery.
